The Write Way to Wellness

Every project I start is inspired by my life's journey. As a child I had a grand imagination. I loved creating costumes for my dolls out of construction paper. I spent hours listening to cassettes and CDs, singing and pretending to be a headliner at a huge concert venue, as if my living room were Madison Square Garden. Most of the time, I used to sit down and write almost every day. I would write in my journals. I wrote poetry and songs. I also wrote screenplays on my big IBM PC, mainly scary horror scripts. It is safe to say I was a creative child. Today as an adult I create systems. I founded Ray of Light Wellness LLC an online mental health company specializing in trauma-informed care, servicing residents in New England states.  Presently, I am working on a passion project called The Ray of Light Wellness Shop. This addition to the mental health company will allow talented professionals to spread their knowledge and abilities, teaching others their crafts throughout the USA and beyond. This allows Ray of Light Wellness to bypass through the red tape of mental health licensing and provide other modalities that can be offered anywhere to anyone while still helping to improve mental health and wellness. Why am I doing this? I do not think mental health counseling is enough. I strongly believe in a wholistic approach.

When conceptualizing The Ray of Light Wellness Shop I had no doubt I would add creative writing as a modality. It feels like a dream that I get to collaborate with gifted creative writers whom I selected for this project. Who said dreams can’t come true?

Why is writing important for mental health?

Whether through journaling, poetry, or storytelling, writing can serve as a powerful tool for enhancing mental well-being. Writing provides individuals with a safe space to express their thoughts and feelings. Writing allows us to explore complex emotions that might seem overwhelming when kept inside. Journaling, for instance, allows for the articulation of feelings, helping to process grief, anger, anxiety, depression, etc. Engaging in writing can also significantly lower stress levels. Research has demonstrated that expressive writing can lead to reduced levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Writing not only encourages emotional expression but also fosters self-reflection. Through reflective writing, individuals can analyze their experiences, thoughts, and behaviors. This introspection can lead to greater insight into personal patterns, ultimately guiding individuals towards healthier choices and coping mechanisms.

The act of writing is not solely emotional; it is also cognitive. Writing enhances critical thinking skills and promotes clarity of thought. This mental exercise stimulates the brain and can improve overall cognitive functioning, which is particularly beneficial for those experiencing anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Writing alters brain functioning and promotes mental health. Writing stimulates various regions of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for higher-level thinking and decision-making. When people write their feelings into words, it calms the amygdala. This is important because the amygdala is your emotional response center (the brain’s alarm and threat detector). This helps to shift out of fight or flight responses. Another incredible fact is that writing can induce neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize and form new connections throughout life. Engaging in expressive writing leads to structural changes in the brain, particularly in areas associated with emotional regulation. These changes can improve mood and resilience over time. AMAZING!

In addition to its benefits, writing can also trigger the release of neurochemicals that promote happiness and well-being. For example, writing can increase levels of oxytocin, which facilitates social bonding and trust, and dopamine, known as the “feel-good” neurotransmitter. These chemicals can enhance mood and create a sense of reward and accomplishment.

Writing serves not only as a powerful means of expression but also as a profound tool for mental health and wellness. For anyone seeking to improve their mental health, integrating writing into daily routines could be a transformative step toward emotional clarity and stability. Whether through journaling, poetry, songwriting, or screenplay writing, the written word has the potential to heal, empower, and illuminate the path toward mental wellness. So, grab a notebook or open a document, and let your thoughts flow onto the page; your mind will thank you for it.
